Looking for a houseplant with large leaves? Here are our top 5 large-leaf houseplants. Whether you have a sunny spot or are looking for a plant that does well in the shade, there is always a large-leaf houseplant to suit your interior.

1 - Spathiphyllum

If you're looking for a houseplant with large leaves, you can't beat the Spathiphyllum. Native to the Amazon region, this air-purifying plant grows along the banks of the river. You might not expect it, but this flowering houseplant can grow up to 150 cm tall, depending on the variety. The Spathiphyllum comes in several varieties, but if you are looking for a houseplant with large leaves, we recommend the Sensation or Sweet Sebastiano.

Position:   Half-shade
Care:   Easy

The Spathiphyllum prefers a spot with some light shade. You can keep the soil nice and moist and if the leaves start drooping, that's a sign that the plant needs water again. With the right location and care, this houseplant can flower several times a year.

2 - Musa Dwarf Cavendish (Banana plant)

Bring the tropics into your home with the Musa Dwarf Cavendish. This eye-catcher is immediately recognisable by its very large leaves. The Musa, also known as the banana plant, originates from the tropical rain forests of Asia. Under the right conditions, the banana plant can grow considerably in both length and width, so keep this in mind when you buy it. The most important question: will Bananas grow? Yes, after a few years this is possible, but in practice it will be difficult to achieve.

Position:   Sunny
Care:   Average

The Musa Dwarf Cavendish prefers a sunny spot, only in the middle of summer this can be just too much light, in that period move it a little further away from the window. It is best to keep the soil moist, but be careful not to put its feet in water. This houseplant likes high humidity, so don't forget to spray the large leaves regularly too. Brown edges and torn leaves cannot be avoided, but regular spraying will keep them looking nice for longer.

3 - Alocasia

This list should definitely include the Alocasia. This houseplant gets bigger and bigger leaves as it gets older, which is why it is also called the Elephant's Ear. This plant grows naturally in the tropical rain forests of Asia and Australia, where its large leaves are used by the population for shelter when it rains.

Position:   Sunny
Care:   Average

The Alocasia prefers a sunny spot, only in high summer it can be too much, so move it a little further away from the window. It is best to keep the soil slightly moist and don't forget to water the large leaves regularly. Alocasia likes high humidity, so don't put it near the heating in winter.

4 - Monstera Deliciosa

With its unusually shaped leaves, the Monstera Deliciosa is the trend of the moment. When you see the leaves of this plant, you immediately know where it got its name Hole Plant. In this plant, a green leaf first grows on the stem and then, over time, holes appear in the leaves. The older the plant gets, the larger the leaves will become. The Monstera is naturally a climbing plant and is found in the tropical rain forests of South and Central America.

Position:   Semi-shade or shade
Care:   Easy

The Monstera Deliciosa prefers a spot with some shade. In the rainforest, it grows under trees, so it knows what it is to be in the shade. This plant's soil is best kept slightly moist, but be careful not to keep its feet wet. Are no holes developing in the leaves? Then it is probably just too dark and you should give it a slightly lighter spot.

5 - Strelitzia (Bird of Paradise)

The Strelitzia is a trendy houseplant that you immediately recognise by its large leaves. The Strelitzia is known for its beautiful flowers, but we won't see it often in the living room. Only older plants can bloom under the right conditions.  The two best-known species are the Nicolai and Reginae, which are native to South Africa. Strelitzia Nicolai is by the way the species with the largest leaves.

Position:   Sun or half shade
Care:   Average

Strelitzia does well in a place with plenty of light and likes slightly moist soil. Furthermore, it is important to regularly spray the leaves with water to keep them healthy and reduce brown edges. The older leaves will start tearing over time though and the chance of a brown edge is also definitely present, this is just part of the plant.

Tips & tricks:
  • Regularly turn your plants a little, this will prevent them from growing crookedly towards the light
  • If you regularly spray your plant's leaves with water, they will stay beautiful for longer
  • Give your houseplant food in spring and summer to encourage healthy growth
  • Plants dislike cold water, make sure the water is at room temperature

Do not forget to pot your houseplant
After purchase, it is important to take good care of your new plant, because you want to enjoy it for a long time. So immediately pot up your houseplant with its large leaves in a suitable ornamental pot. This way, you ensure that the roots have more room to develop, which in turn contributes to the resistance and health of your houseplant.
